A remarkable 1.5 tonne marble statue of William Ewart Gladstone is an integral part of the town’s streetscape.
The 19th century marble statue is the region’s namesake, William Ewart Gladstone. He made his mark as the Prime Minister of Great Britain and his political career spanned over 60 years. He was named the ‘Grand Old Man’ and was a great statesman of his time.
The statue was first recorded as being in Centennial Park in Sydney in 1895 along with 31 statues. The origins of this sculpture remain unknown prior to being in Sydney. It was sent for restoration in the 1970s and in 1986 a Gladstone local music teacher discovered the statue during a visit to Sydney. After lengthy negotiations he was able to relocate the statue to Gladstone. It now sits installed in the purpose-built glass bridge at the Gladstone Regional Art Gallery for the public to view and to ensure safety and longevity of the piece.
