Day 1: Slow down in Gladstone

Ease into your winter school holiday escape with a relaxed day exploring Gladstone’s waterfront. Start with breakfast by the water, wander East Shores Parklands and the Gladstone Marina Parklands, then walk up to Auckland Point Lookout for sweeping harbour views.

Finish with a drink at Pavilion and lean into that holiday feeling rather than rushing on to the next thing.

Day 2: Travel to Heron Island and settle in

This is where the itinerary becomes something truly special. On day two, make your way out to Heron Island and settle into life on the Southern Great Barrier Reef. Because Heron is a stay-only experience rather than a day trip, the magic is in slowing down and immersing yourself in island life from the moment you arrive.

Spend the rest of day two settling in, exploring the island and enjoying your first taste of the reef. It is the perfect time to ease into the experience, join a guided activity, or simply take in the feeling of being surrounded by coral cay beauty and clear blue water.

Day 3: A full day to experience the reef

Day three is your full island day, giving you time to properly experience everything that makes Heron so special. Snorkel over coral gardens, keep an eye out for turtles gliding through the water, take the I-Spy semi-submersible for a different view of the reef, or head out by kayak or stand-up paddleboard. Winter brings calm days, comfortable temperatures and incredible opportunities to experience the reef. Keep an eye out for turtles gliding through the water and, later in the season, migrating humpback whales passing through Southern Great Barrier Reef waters.

Heron Island is also an Eco Certified destination, with a strong focus on sustainability, reef education and conservation. The presence of the University of Queensland’s Heron Island Research Station adds another layer to the experience, while Master Reef Guides and naturalist-led activities help bring the island’s wildlife, reef system and ecology to life in a meaningful way.

Day 4: One more island morning before returning

On day four, enjoy one more relaxed island morning before returning to the mainland in the afternoon. That final chance to soak up the reef atmosphere is part of what makes an overnight stay here so worthwhile. You are not just visiting the reef. You are living alongside it, even if only for a couple of nights.

Day 5: Return gently

Back on the mainland, keep the last day easy. One more breakfast, one more coffee and add in a brewery tour at Ward’s Brewery before heading home. After a few days split between Gladstone and Heron Island, the whole trip feels less like an add-on and more like a proper island holiday.

Five days is all it takes to swap routine for reef time. With winter sunshine, island adventures and plenty of time to slow down, it’s the perfect school holiday escape in the Gladstone Region.
