Gladstone region …
an eco-certified destination
We did it! The Gladstone region, gateway to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, home to Indigenous cultural sites of great significance to the Bailai, Gurang, Gooreng Gooreng, and Taribelang Bunda people. has achieved its Eco Destination Certification through Ecotourism Australia! With such a vast array of natural wonders including national parks, uninhabited islands and untouched hinterland, and the huge strides in the sustainable direction we are taking as a community, it’s no surprise.
This accreditation demonstrates the strong commitment of industry, local government, and the entire community towards all aspects of regional sustainability. Achieving it was a joint effort by key stakeholders including Gladstone Regional Council, and Gladstone Ports Corporation, and puts us on the map alongside fellow eco-certified destinations including our neighbour Bundaberg Region. It demonstrates how we protect, respect, and nurture our community, culture, and natural environment.

what is the significance of eco-certification?
An Eco Destination is dedicated to minimizing the environmental impact through sustainable practices, and respecting host cultures while providing top-notch nature-based experiences for visitors and locals to enjoy and share. This ensures that nature-loving, eco-conscious travellers can enjoy their adventures while making responsible choices for our planet, and also educates newcomers to the eco-tourism scene.
Ecotourism Australia’s certification program, the world’s oldest national non-profit ecotourism accreditation, encourages businesses to become eco-certified across six different categories which include: Destination Management, Nature & Scenery, Environment & Climate, Culture & Tradition, Social Well-being; and Business & Communication.
The stamp of approval, in the form of accreditation from Ecotourism Australia, allows us to be recognised by environmentally aware visitors. It demonstrates our commitment to authentic, unique, culturally responsible, and environmentally sustainable experiences, which are top of the list of priorities for discerning travellers.
