Recognised as one of Queensland’s leading freshwater fishing destinations, Lake Awoonga is renowned for its Barramundi. Lucky anglers can also encounter a variety of other native fish species. The lake is stocked with fish produced at the nearby Aquaculture Gladstone fish hatchery.

Lake Awoonga and the surrounding environment is home to an abundance of native wildlife, including Whiptail Wallabies, Yellow-bellied Gliders, Grey-headed Flying Foxes and a diverse range of birdlife, making the area a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and birdwatchers.
